Cable Modems Compatible With Optimum Online (Without Optimum Voice) (July 2020)

Did you know that Optimum Online is likely charging you over $10 a month for the privilege to rent a cable modem from them?  That’s $120 every year!  Did you also know that you buy your own compatible modem for less than $75 on average?  Think about it, by buying your own modem, you’ll break even in about 8 months, then continue to use that modem for years in the future!  For that reason, it’s probably best to spend a bit more and buy a modem with higher supported speed tiers to ensure long term use than to buy a cheaper one and have to buy another one in the future.   Check out and purchase one of these cable modems compatible with Optimum Online and then when it arrives, contact Optimum, provide them the device’s MAC address and you’ll be up and running in no time at all!  Please note that these cable modems do not support Optimum Voice, if you need support for that, then Optimum is limited to older modems that may be difficult to find in new condition.

Optimum 100 and Lower Speed Tiers

NETGEAR CM400 Cable Modem

The maximum speed of this device is 100Mbps, which will take you right up to the maximum speed tier of the Optimum 100 service, and of course any lower services beneath that threshold.  While this is an affordable option, it does not offer you much upgradability for future upgrades in speed.

Optimum 300 and Lower Speed Tiers

NETGEAR CM500 Cable Modem

The maximum speed of this device is 300Mbps, which will take you right up to the maximum speed tier of the Optimum 300 service, and any lower services below that top speed threshold.  This is a more moderate choice as 300Mbps is quite a bit of bandwidth and most people won’t come close to using it even if you are streaming everything in your household all at once.

Motorola MB7220 Cable Modem

The maximum speed of this device is 300Mbps, which will take you right up to the maximum speed tier of the Optimum 300 service, and any lower services below that top speed threshold.  Editor’s note – this is the modem that I have been using for years and it has never let me down once.  Handles all streaming TV, movies, etc. without any delays or hiccups and is very reasonably priced.

NETGEAR CM700 Cable Modem

The maximum speed of this device is 500Mbps, which will take you right up to the maximum speed tier of the Optimum 400 service, and any lower services below that top speed threshold.  As of now, Optimum does not appear to offer and Optimum 500 speed tier, but if they do in the future you would be covered with this modem to achieve those extra 100Mbps of speed over Optimum 400.

Motorola MB7621 Cable Modem

The maximum speed of this device is 1000Mbps (1Gbps), which will take you right up to the maximum speed tier of the Optimum 1 Gig service, and any lower services below that top speed threshold.  If you want the ultimate in flexibility for future speed increases, this modem would cover you for the foreseeable future until they migrate to full fiber to the premises offerings.

ARRIS SURFboard SB8200

The maximum speed of this device is a whopping 2000Mbps (2Gbps) combined with 2x 1 Gig ports capable of link aggregation, which will take you above and beyond the maximum speed tier of the Optimum 1 Gig service if combined, and any lower services below that top speed threshold.  This modem is really for someone who anticipates the need to have two – 1 gig services piped into their home and to get the full bandwidth behind it.
